The Importance of Play

Play is a serious business - it is important in every single aspect of your children's development and education. It is the way they acquire the skills and knowledge they need to prepare for adult life.

KinderGym promotes the following types of play:

  • Physical energetic play — helps children learn how to control their bodies and coordinate their actions, e.g. climbing up and down equipment, hitting or kicking balls or balloons, rolling down slopes.
  • Experimental play — finding out what can and cannot be done, leading to more discoveries about using their bodies, e.g. sorting activities. By watching and talking to them, you can help your child find the right words to describe their discoveries.
  • Fantasy play — acting out situations with friends or toys, helps children make sense of the world around them.
  • Playing with friends teaches children:
    • how to cooperate
    • develop social skills
    • develop a sense of fair play
    • follow rules
    • make friends again after a disagreement
    • develop a sense of humour.
